I set up the New Zealand Running Calendar in 2010 and the Australian one two years later, with the goal of making them the most comprehensive and up to date calendar of running events across the two countries.
I achieved that goal some time ago, but along the way it became a full-time job, but without achieving a full-time income.
What do I actually do all day for it to be a full-time job?
Almost all the other event listing websites out there sit back and wait for event managers to submit their events. The problem with this is that most event managers don’t, so most event listing websites have hardly any events listed.
When I first started the NZ website, I knew the only way to have a comprehensive events calendar was to seek out events, keep checking event websites for new dates and updates, subscribe to their various communication channels (email, Facebook, etc.) and work, work, work at it.
So what do I do all day? I spend all day poring over event websites, Facebook feeds, my own website’s event listings and so on to find new events, update existing events when something’s changed (cancellations, date changes, entries opened, etc.), and more.
I quite literally look at hundreds of websites each week to source information so that you don’t have to. You get it all packaged in a single comprehensive, searchable website.
I also do the website programming to add new features & fix bugs, send out the weekly email newsletters, do the accounting, sell advertising space and every other little thing a small business needs to do to keep running.
Why the Running Calendar needs you
The primary source of income for the running calendar websites is from selling advertising space. However, there are only so many ads you can put on a website and only so much you can charge for those ads.
